Review : the new Matte Shaker lipsticks by Lancôme

Same packaging, but a different content. Lancôme launched this spring their new Matte Shakers, their matte liquid lipsticks, proposing once again the shaker-shaped packaging that was so successfully used last spring for the Juicy Shakers, Lancôme oil-based gloss.
No worries, you won’t mix them up, the Matte Shakers have a black cap as opposed to the silver cap of the Juicy Shakers.

The Matte Shakers also share with the Juicy Shakers the same cushion technique to apply the product, however they are a completely different product, with different formulation and results.
In facts, I had been attracted to the Juicy Shakers by their packaging, but eventually I was disappointed by the product, as explained in this review here. On the contrary, I have fully appreciated the Matte Shakers, in particular for the formulation of the lipstick. These liquid lipsticks have got a very good pigmentation, with an intense color and a matte finish.

Ingredients

Directly form the Lancôme web-site, here comes their composition:

AQUA / WATER ● DIMETHICONE ● ISODODECANE ● OCTYLDODECANOL ● BUTYLENE GLYCOL ● ALCOHOL ● ACRYLATES/POLYTRIMETHYLSILOXYMETHACRYLATE COPOLYMER ● CETYL PEG/PPG-10/1 DIMETHICONE ● TRIMETHYL PENTAPHENYL TRISILOXANE ● DISTEARDIMONIUM HECTORITE ● POLYGLYCERYL-4 ISOSTEARATE ● TIN OXIDE ● PEG/PPG-18/18 DIMETHICONE ● CALCIUM ALUMINUM BOROSILICATE ● CALCIUM SODIUM BOROSILICATE ● SILICA ● ALUMINA ● ALUMINUM HYDROXIDE ● MAGNESIUM SILICATE ● MAGNESIUM SULFATE ● COLOPHONIUM / ROSIN ● DISODIUM STEAROYL GLUTAMATE ● PROPYLENE CARBONATE ● SYNTHETIC FLUORPHLOGOPITE ● TOCOPHEROL ● PENTAERYTHRITYL TETRA-DI-T-BUTYL HYDROXYHYDROCINNAMATE ● PHENOXYETHANOL ● LIMONENE ● HEXYL CINNAMAL ● PARFUM / FRAGRANCE ● [+/- MAY CONTAIN CI 15850 / RED 6 ● CI 15850 / RED 7 ● CI 15850 / RED 7 LAKE ● CI 15985 / YELLOW 6 LAKE ● CI 17200 / RED 33 LAKE ● CI 19140 / YELLOW 5 LAKE ● CI 42090 / BLUE 1 LAKE ● CI 45380 / RED 22 LAKE ● CI 45410 / RED 28 LAKE ● CI 75470 / CARMINE ● CI 77120 / BARIUM SULFATE ● CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499 / IRON OXIDES ● CI 77742 / MANGANESE VIOLET ● CI 77891 / TITANIUM DIOXIDE – – 7 / 9 – MICA

As you can see, amongst the first ingredients, we can find water and silicone, which make these products fluid and easy to apply, all while keeping their texture quite light.
Indeed, after the application, you have to allow a few minutes for the lipstick to dry up, and afterwards they will stick very comfortably to your lips, they won’t give you the awkward feeling of dry lips and they won’t smudge; they are really like a second skin.

Lancôme’s own description of their formulation is that of “water in oil”, crafted for an easy application and no stickiness and this seems to me as a very appropriate description.

My test

The Matte Shakers will last on your lips around 5 hours. Effectively, already after some 3 hours, one can notice a certain loss of intensity, however, the color stays on.
I have personally tested the 270 Beige Vintage and the 272 Energy Peach. Both passed the test positively, as they gave me a good coverage, intense and homogeneous. As opposed to the Juicy Shakers, the Matte Shakers do not have fruit scent, although they do have a delicate scent anyhow.

The applicator

Matte Shaker’s cushion applicator is very practical; on the flip side, I am not convinced it is ideal for a matte finish lipstick. The tip of the applicator, which works very well with the Juicy Shakers, seems to be too big for the Matte Shakers. In order to fine-tune the application, it is sometimes needed to use a cotton bud eliminate smudges.
On the other side, this type of applicator guarantees a homogeneous and full layer of product.

Conclusion: Matte Shakers are a really good product, with the applicator being their only flaw, as it is at times not very convenient and precise. Besides that, if we talk about texture, comfort, lasting and finish, in my opinion they are a top product.
